“Protect Our Ecosystems: Stop the Destruction of Native Vegetation in the Name of Fire Prevention”

Por todo o país, autarquias e juntas de freguesia estão a destruir ecossistemas inteiros sob o pretexto da “limpeza para prevenção de incêndios”.

Em Ericeira, um talude natural atrás de edifícios residenciais foi totalmente cortado até ficar em terra nua - uma área que antes estava cheia de vida: jovens pinheiros, coelhos-bravos, borboletas e pirilampos, estes últimos altamente ameaçados em Portugal.

Estas intervenções estão a ser feitas sem estudos ambientais, sem consulta pública e sem qualquer supervisão ecológica, muitas vezes em plena época de reprodução de espécies protegidas.
O resultado é a destruição total de habitats, erosão do solo e risco acrescido de cheias e bolor nas habitações próximas, quando chegam as chuvas.

As autoridades afirmam que estas ações são necessárias para prevenir incêndios - mas a ciência e a experiência mostram o contrário.

A principal causa dos grandes incêndios em Portugal são as extensas plantações de eucalipto, cujos óleos e folhas secas são extremamente inflamáveis.

A vegetação nativa, pelo contrário, retém a humidade, protege o solo e abranda a propagação do fogo.

Esta política de “limpeza” não está a proteger-nos - está a destruir os sistemas naturais que nos protegem.

Nós, abaixo-assinados, exigimos que o Governo e a Assembleia da República:

Reformem a lei nacional de prevenção de incêndios e limpeza de terrenos (Decreto-Lei n.º 82/2021 e regulamentos associados).

Distingam entre espécies invasoras e de alto risco (como o eucalipto) e a vegetação nativa de baixo risco que protege o solo e a biodiversidade.

Proíbam limpezas durante as épocas de reprodução da fauna selvagem.

Tornem obrigatórios estudos ambientais e hidrológicos antes de qualquer intervenção em áreas residenciais ou sensíveis.

Assegurem transparência e responsabilidade por parte das autarquias e juntas que ordenam limpezas.

Promovam reflorestação com espécies nativas e estratégias de prevenção baseadas na biodiversidade, como já é feito com sucesso noutros países mediterrânicos e na Austrália.

Prevenir incêndios deve significar proteger a vida - não destruí-la.

Across Portugal, local authorities are destroying thriving ecosystems under the pretext of “cleaning for fire prevention.”

In Ericeira, an entire green bank behind residential buildings has been cut back to bare soil - a space once full of young pine trees, wild rabbits, butterflies, and fireflies, the latter already highly endangered in Portugal.

These clearances are being carried out without environmental assessments, public consultation, or ecological oversight, often during the breeding season for protected species.

The result is total habitat loss, increased soil erosion, and the creation of flood risks for nearby homes when the rains arrive.

Authorities claim this destruction is necessary to prevent fires - but science and experience tell a different story.

The main driver of catastrophic wildfires in Portugal is the vast monoculture of eucalyptus plantations, whose oils and dry litter act as powerful accelerants.

Native vegetation, on the other hand, retains moisture, stabilises soil, and slows fire spread.

This misguided “cleaning” policy is not protecting us. It’s destroying the natural systems that protect the land, the wildlife, and our communities.

We, the undersigned, demand that the Portuguese Government and Parliament:

Reform the national fire prevention and land cleaning laws (Decreto-Lei n.º 82/2021 and related regulations).

Differentiate between invasive high-risk species (like eucalyptus) and native low-risk vegetation that prevents erosion and supports biodiversity.

Prohibit vegetation clearance during wildlife breeding seasons.

Require environmental and hydrological assessments before any clearing near residential or protected areas.

Ensure transparency and accountability from municipalities and juntas when ordering cleanings.

Promote native reforestation and biodiversity-based fire prevention, as proven in other Mediterranean and Australian regions.

Fire prevention should mean protecting life - not destroying it.
