Open Letter from iMM potsdocs and senior researchers

Postdoctoral and senior researchers (hereinafter referred to as “postdocs”) are one of the main workforces of Instituto de Medicina Molecular João Lobo Antunes (iMM), ensuring the continuity of research projects, student supervision, grant writing, public engagement, and more. Despite this, the employment conditions and perspectives offered leave us in an increasingly demotivated position, with 80% of those surveyed considering leaving if conditions do not improve.
During the last Town-Hall, we once again felt that our needs were completely disregarded, and will continue to be as we transition to GIMM. Although motivated by the Town-Hall, the issues we wish to raise in this letter are not new.
With this Open Letter, iMM postdocs, collectively, bring to the attention of the Board of Directors of iMM the following issues:
(1) Absence of Postdoc representatives in discussions and the decision-making process;
(2) Lack of a plan for career progression and recognition;
(3) Need for structured support for career planning and development.
It is with a sense of responsibility and a commitment to the well-being of our esteemed institute that we wish to foster a deep and constructive dialogue to improve the working conditions of postdoctoral and senior researchers, as well as of iMM and the world-class GIMM as a whole.
