Inclusion of Non Invasive H. pylori Tests in SNS Coverage and Expansion of Oral Health for Patients with H. pylori Infection

Helicobacter pylori infections affect approximately 70% of the adult population in Portugal, contributing to the highest rates of gastric cancer in Europe. Traditional antibiotic treatments face significant challenges, including increasing resistance and side effects. Currently, the National Health Service (SNS) does not co-finance the costs of non-invasive H. pylori tests, limiting patients' access to diagnosis and treatment. Additionally, it is necessary to include H. pylori infection in dental care for low income patients.
The proposed solution suggests implementing non-invasive tests and promoting healthier eating, including natural treatments, as well as integrating dental care. These measures would not only increase accessibility to diagnosis and family treatment but also help prevent reinfection and reduce the spread of H. pylori. Including these tests in SNS coverage is essential to ensure a more effective and cost-efficient approach.
We urge the SNS and health authorities to consider this proposal and help improve public health in Portugal. Your support is crucial to demonstrate community backing and encourage the implementation of these necessary changes. Additionally, we request that the Government consider creating a pilot and strategic project to combat the high rate of Helicobacter pylori infections in Portugal. It is essential that health be considered a priority for Portugal, ensuring human and technical resources that allow equitable access to the best healthcare, in line with other European Union countries. Several studies suggest the complementary use of natural treatments alongside antibiotics.
