The Madeirense people, particularly those in Funchal, often refer to their high living standard and claim to be civilized and ethical people. The living standard probably being true though, being civilized and ethical people surely comes into question considering how those Madeirense sometimes treat their animals despite the fact that they have given themselves laws to treat them better, not mentioning the laws Madeirense are under from them being members of the European Union, that finances and financed Madeira's high living standard. So, get your people and law enforcement into order and treat your animals as your laws tell you - otherwise be called unethical and uncivilized and expect to sooner or later loose some of the EU's funds for your high living standard.

“Abrigos para os animais abandonados e em situações de maus tratos” will fill up very quickly, but yes, they would be a help in the short term. What is needed desperately are neutering campaigns, affordable neutering, law enforcement for people who abandon or ill treat animals and very importantly education and constant publicity how to look after dogs and cats. As a volunteer for the German animal welfare organisation “Anima Hilfe fuer Tiere e. V.” I have come across countless requests from tourists asking for help for animals in Madeira, which “Anima Hilfe fuer Tiere e. V.” has provided for more than 20 years including free annual neutering campaigns on Porto Santo – and animals are still being abandoned there.

Considero que deveriam existir mais ajudas para os animais que estão em situações lamentáveis ou que efetivamente necessitam. As associações fazem o que podem e o que não podem, mas não são suficientes, pois precisam de ajudas para conseguirem fazer o belo trabalho que fazem. Desde já agradeço e acho que deveria ser feito alguma coisa para evitar que continuem a existir tantos animais abandonados e a necessitar de tratamentos.
