Madam President of the Assembly of the Republic of Portugal, the Portuguese government granted rights of onshore and offshore prospection, exploration, development and production of hydrocarbons (oil and natural gas) on the Algarve coast, in or near several Natura 2000 areas such as the Special Protection Areas of Ria Formosa and Castro Marim and the Natural Park of Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina. The research has been carried out without any environmental assessment, and the whole process has been conducted without the necessary transparence. We see with great concern the Algarve 's future, taking into account the impacts that gas and oil exploration can have in a region with a high dependence on tourism and marine activities, with more than 35% of its territory protected by European and Portuguese laws Some of the major harmful impacts that this activity, are: • the incompatibility between a tourist region and exploration of oil and gas; • an increase in the intensity and frequency of seismic activity in a region where the high seismic risk and the possibility of being hit by a tsunami can´t be ignored; • a possible accident in the prospecting phase, exploration phase or during the transportation of hydrocarbons (oil and gas), causing serious environmental and social problems, with the loss of resources that an accidental spill of oil and / or gas would bring to the marine activities. These impacts will have consequences on health, deterioration in the quality of life of populations and the marine ecosystems. The undersigned and various entities are opposed to these exploration by the threat they pose to the local populations, and to the global warming through the production and use of an outdated energy model. This project is not defensible even from an economic point of view, since the financial contributions to the Portuguese State are insignificant. Thus, under the constitutional, legal and regulatory duties that the Assembly of the Republic and you have, we ask your urgent intervention, to unable the prospection and exploration of oil and natural gas.
